UMUNUMO-AMAUZARI IN THE USA: A timely mission to add value to the land of our birth

Image
Umunumo is one of the villages in Amauzari autonomous community in Isiala-Mbano Local Government Area (LGA) of Imo State, Nigeria. Although a small village comprised of four kindred (Umuoma, Umuhire, Umuduru and Umuokwaraji), it is one of fastest developing villages in Amauzari community.   In terms of the development of education, we have at least one elementary and secondary school in Umunumo. Whereas the primary school (Progress Primary School) is an intervention of government, the secondary school (God’s Crown Academy) is privately owned. Most of Umunumo people had their elementary education at Progress Primary School (formally called LA).   The youth of Umunumo have recently started having conversations around the establishment of a tertiary institution with the proposed name ‘Umunumo-Amauzari Institute for Research and Human Development’ (UIRAD) which would become the first ever degree awarding institution in Isiala Mbano LGA of Imo State.   In terms ...

WHY THE UNITED STATES SHOULD RESTRICT ITS TRAVEL BAN ON NIGERIA TO THE POLITICIANS ONLY

Image
Recently, the United States placed Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, in the list of countries with travel restrictions to the United States. In the case of Nigeria, the travel ban would most significantly affect ‘immigrant visa’ applications. With this development, the ability of individuals to file applications for members of their families in Nigeria, to move and live permanently in the United States has become severely threatened. Although this restriction is expected to affect all categories of Nigerian citizens who are eligible to migrate to the United States, it is noteworthy that the ordinary citizens will be most affected. Like every other policy change involving the country Nigeria, the ordinary citizens have always been at the receiving end of it, and suffering most of the negative consequences. The rich political class are seemingly powerful, and would always have a way to wriggle themselves out of the situation, and leaving the helpless 'common man' ...

REBUILDING NIGERIA’S IMAGE THE JOY BRINGERS’ WAY

Image
It is no news that security has become a rising concern to nations and one of the threats to global peace and progress. It’s affected even the big game changers like America, Europe, Britain and so on. Down the road to the developing countries in Asia and Africa, security has taken a far bigger toll on the people, their lives and wellbeing. Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa is one of the worst hit in the recent trend of global insecurity, crime and now terrorism. The real causes are not far fetched; from dwindling economy to unemployment, visionless leadership, surging population, and so on. The country’s prison service (now called correctional service) has become unduly stretched as a result of the rising number of arrest and convictions. The facilities that were initially designed for fewer number of inmates have had to accommodate sometimes up to a triple number of the intended capacity. Similarly, the ability of the prison service to optimally correct the behavior ...

AMASCO ALUMNI REUNION 2019: The historic homecoming of impact makers

Image
It was Margaret Mead who said “never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can CHANGE the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has” The greatest endowment of mankind is the ability to make an impact, especially where it never existed. No wonder that  Isaac Newton said, a body will continue in its state of motion until it is acted upon by a force. There is hence no change until there is a force, and there is no force until there is a zeal. The wise people summarized it thus, “where there’s a will (zeal), there’s a way”.  I am very proud of this generation of Amasco Alumni for our mutual zeal and doggedness for change. In the last few months, we spoke change, we heard change and we saw change. We did what had never been done in the history of Amauzari Comprehensive Secondary School. We convened a huge home coming which planning started and ended through online coordination.  We deserve all the accolades for such giant feat th...

Amauzari, Imo State: A Community’s Cry for Help

Image
There are only a few communities in the world who have supported themselves and supported its citizens the way that Amauzari has done. An autonomous community located in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, Amauzari has a population of about 50, 000 most of whom are peasant farmers and traders. Geographically, it is the gateway city to Amaigbo (Nwangele Local Government), Nkwerre (Nkwerre Local Government), Amandugba (Njaba Local Government), Ogwa (Ikeduru Local Government), Atta (Ikeduru Local Government) and Amaraku (Isiala Mbano Local Government) of Imo State. Being one of the largest autonomous  communities in Imo State, Amauzari deserves to have benefitted from support of both the Federal, State and Local Governments. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case, as the community whose arable soil has massively supported local food production is in serious neglect of the government at all levels. From healthcare to education, water, electricity and access road, it...

An Alumni’s Never To Be Missed Opportunities

Image
Alumni association is not a new idea in the history of humanity. What still stands as a challenge to most alumni association across the world is how to galvanize their thoughts, actions and aspirations towards their Alma mater. To say the least, most alumnus are desirous or positive ways to add value to the institution that formed part of their upbringing. Here are a few tips on how not miss the enormous opportunities that an alumni association offers to its members: 1. Start small: Never imagine that you can rebuild, reconstruct and rebrand all of that institution with flick of a finger.  2. Identify the small projects that add greater value Always look around for those smaller things that makes a difference such as purchasing packet of chalk, providing biros and exercise books  3. Organize your selves into management elements  This could be by year of graduation, houses such as red house, yellow house etc 4. Tackle the issues one at a time...
